Trinity College at the University of Toronto in winter, where I'm giving a keynote talk for UTSC's Award Gala

I’m giving the keynote talk at UTSC’s Marketing Group Awards Gala this weekend. It’s being held at the University of Toronto‘s Trinity College and I’m excited to head back to campus.

My talk’s title is, “Marketing Career Tea: 5 Things Leaders Expect New Hires to Know.” I’ll also present one of the awards.

Many students experience trepidation when leaving their undergrad education. I’m looking forward to help demystify the ‘school to first job’ transition.

Through my career strategy practice, I’ve realized that in the remote work era, a lot of tacit lessons that I picked up through observation in my early jobs are much harder to learn now.

Leaders don’t always realize their younger peers have these gaps. I summarize a few of the big ones I’ve noticed in conversations with my client base.

What do I mean? It’s little things like:

  • Asking for help but making sure you approach your boss with a few ideas
  • Figuring out where your strengths fit in your discipline and how to grow
  • What it takes to get hired (hint: receipts!)
  • Finding mutual wins for you and your organization
  • Strategies for networking *despite the inevitable awkwardness

Why I love a full-circle career moment

As you grow, full circle moments are a deep gift. I spent two years working at U of T early on in my working life. I have fond memories of the institution and my peers in Media Relations.

On a more personal level, my early experience and familiarity with St. George’s campus are why U of T makes an appearance in Chaos Calling, my debut novel. It’s also why Anna, the story’s main character, completed her undergrad there in history.

I’m looking forward to the gala! Find me on LinkedIn to see a photo from my keynote talk at UTSC’s Award Gala (provided I remember to take one).
